November brings “The Welsh Bruce Springsteen” to the Eden Court.
Drawing from Folk, Rock, Soul, Folk Funk and Americana whilst dodging specific labeling, he has hints of John Mayer, Bruce Cockburn and Dave Matthews in his music. Creating an emotional laiden narrative that has been said to empower and speak for many.
Martyn has won accolades including Best Male Artist at the 2004 BBC Welsh Music Awards and in 2012 his song “There’s Always Maybe” won the best folk song category in the World Independent Music Awards. This has been further complimented by five top fifty hits and a list of acts that he has toured with that is impressive to say the least including Art Garfunkel, Jools Holland, Ani DiFranco, Suzanne Vega, Mike and The Mechanics, Joan Armatrading, Celine Dion and Shirley Bassey.
2013 saw him release a CD of Bruce Springsteen covers which gained plaudits from The Boss’s biographer and music critic, Dave Marsh. The similarities with Springsteen has been seen in his other material as well, MOJO described that he Martyn plays a “Springsteen-indebted Americana, suspended folk chords glistening beneath troubadour tales, his lyrical eloquence still inspired almost 30 years on from his debut”.
Martyn plays the Eden Court on the 9th of November. Tickets available online.
