Roddy McKenzie takes a look through his 2013 with Inverness Gigs.

MIR The Eagle Bar 27 4 13 - Life (or a year) through a lens
It started with a MIR. Yep, these guys really fired up my interest in live music again. One of my favourite live acts of the year, working with them gave me the confidence to start dabbling in concert photography.
The Whiskys 13 4 13 at The Tea Posy in Dingwall - Life (or a year) through a lens
The Whiskys – my first ‘assignment’ for IG and a mighty fine performance in one of my favourite venues. Although it was only later on that I appreciated I’d been tricked into writing, it was worth it. (Click on the picture to read the Roddy’s review)
Belle Sebastian The Ironworks.1 7 13. jpg 468x600 - Life (or a year) through a lens
Belle & Sebastian. My central-belt punk and indie roots are showing. A full Ironworks just has to be one of my favourite places. (Click on the picture to read Toby Stainton’s review)
Seasick Steve Belladrum 2013 600x600 - Life (or a year) through a lens
Seasick Steve and fireworks from my first festival outing of what turned out to be a pretty spectacular festival season. Belladrum’s 10th was really something quite special, fabulous weather, great acts and festival crowd on top form. (Click image to read Toby Stainton’s review)

Runrig The Party on the Moor 10 8 13 - Life (or a year) through a lens
Runrig – I have to be honest – have never been one of my favourite acts, but the Party on the Moor was a landmark event and the atmosphere was pretty damned special. (Click image to read Julia Kirk’s review)
Jemma Tweedie AmaSing 1 9 13 - Life (or a year) through a lens
Next up, amaSing Festival in Strathpeffer. The inaugural event and I’m hoping not the last. Such good hosts and real community spirit writ large here. First time I had caught Jemma Tweedie live, and I’m looking forward to a repeat in 2014. Nice to see that she is working hard on a EP. (Click on the image to see our coverage of the festival)
Casual Sex Jocktoberfest 7 9 13 - Life (or a year) through a lens
Jocktoberfest. This was just a joy from the start of the day right on through. Once again my roots are showing, I’d first saw Casual Sex at the goNORTH Festival earlier in the year and was delighted to see them take to the stage here. (Click on the image to see our coverage of the festival)
Newton Faulkener Loopallu 21 9 13 - Life (or a year) through a lens
Loopallu. Just an absolutely great full-stop to the festival season. brilliant acts, fabulous crowd and a headline return for Newton Faulkener, a Loopallu favourite. (Click on picture to see the review of the festival.)
R M Hubbert The Bothy Hootenannys 27 9 13 - Life (or a year) through a lens
R.M Hubbert. Stunning. The Bothy was the perfect place for this gig. I had interviewed him for IG and it was a pleasure to meet him. One other strong memory of that evening – Calum Martin had engineered the most flawless sound for the event. (Click image to read Roddy’s review)
Alice Bentley The Ironworks supporting Fatherson 27 10 13 - Life (or a year) through a lens
Alice Bentley – of all the local singer/songwriter acts that it has been the pleasure of covering this year – I’m bound to say Alice has really grown on me the most. I’m looking forward to her fulfilling her promise to return from her Mexico sabbatical and release an EP. (Click image to read Danielle Wilson’s review)
Alabama 3 The Ironworks 8 12 13 - Life (or a year) through a lens

Roddy McKenzie
Life-long engagement with music and a truly eclectic taste (although prog-rock and metal will usually have me scrambling for the off button). If pushed, I would have to say the Velvet Underground are one of the most important band’s of all time. Although I consider myself first and foremost a photographer, as regards reviewing I guess I cut my teeth in the vibrant fanzine scene of the 80’s. Around the same time I started taking photographs and, to be brief, performance and photography were made for each other: perfect match.
