NYOS Jazz Orchestra featuring Jason Singh at Ironworks Venue, Inverness

(Words adapted from NYOS homepage). This evening, NYOS Jazz Orchestra presented a profusion of cool jazz in two parts. In part one, they celebrated the music of Joe Zawinul’s ground-breaking group Weather Report blending grooves and improvisation, through-composed melodies and evolving ensemble textures.

In part two, it was time for something completely different, as the Jazz Orchestra were joined by Jason Singh: beat-boxer, sound artist and vocal sculptor. Jason is a composer and solo artist who works across a wide range of art forms and music genres. His work includes sound installations, live film scores and vocal recreations of birdsong for entire forest-scapes.

Director of Jazz at NYOS Malcolm Edmonstone worked closely with Jason to select aspects of his extensive creative projects and arranged these for NYOS Jazz Orchestra and singers. A challenging yet mouth-watering prospect, the results were spectacular on the night.

Life-long engagement with music and a truly eclectic taste (although prog-rock and metal will usually have me scrambling for the off button). If pushed, I would have to say the Velvet Underground are one of the most important band’s of all time. Although I consider myself first and foremost a photographer, as regards reviewing I guess I cut my teeth in the vibrant fanzine scene of the 80’s. Around the same time I started taking photographs and, to be brief, performance and photography were made for each other: perfect match.
