Review of the Last of the Privateers on the Seedlings stage at Belladrum, 9th of August, 2014.
Last of the Privateers take to the stage late afternoon at the goNorth Seedlings Stage and essentially kick off what was to be a memorable evening in the tent (more of that elsewhere).
Hailing from Edinburgh they are not new to the scene but having been formed by and around lead singer Toby Cooke there has been a name change and a tinkering with the line-up.
There is an intricate accessible sound going on here, a nice acoustic electric balance to the guitars in conversation with the trumpet of Henry Bird: all of which I guess helps to define a sound born of an eclectic americana/ mexicana/indie/folk mix.
It is good, refreshing and draws on their collective influences without ever dissolving into cliché.
Glad I caught them.
