Jim Kennedy is a member of Rhythmnreel, whilst also contributor to invernessGiGs in the form of the Rhythmnreel monthly updates (see here). So what’s Jim’s perspective of 2011?
Jim at Belladrum 2011
What’s your involvement in the music scene?
I’m one of the singers and occasional guitarist of Rhythmnreel. We gig almost every weekend so I don’t get out to many gigs unfortunately.
How has 2011 been for you musically?
2011 has been a successful year for the band. We’ve played all over the highlands; some forays into the central belt; played at 4 music festivals; and enjoyed trips to Germany and Switzerland. It’s been great!
What was the best local act this year. and why?
My top bands are Leonard Jones Potential and Whisky River Band. They both played outstanding sets at Belladrum and show the fantastic range and diversity in the highland music scene.
What was the best non-local act you have seen this year?
It would have to be either Dave Sharp or Jon Gomm, both guys I saw at Rob Ellen’s Medicine Shows. Frankly, I had never heard of these guys and lo and behold they are genius!
What was your favourite music experience this year?
Hearing a huge crowd singalong to our songs at Belladrum on the Thursday night “Craic it open ceilidh” – goosebumps time!
What do you want from Santa?
I just want my kids to be happy.
What’s your hopes for the music scene in 2012?
Losing the Ceol-Mor was a blow to the Inverness music scene. Another venue identifying itself as a rock/indie type venue for bands playing original material would help build on these really strong foundations.
What are your plans for 2012?
Our gig list is already looking pretty busy with foreign trips, (hopefully) the festival circuit as well as our regular stomping ground in the northwest highlands. However, we are always looking to broaden our horizons – Lochaber and the central belt are relatively uncharted territory for us. We plan to put that right.
Got anything to plug?
We are 2/3 through recording a new CD. We are hoping this will be released before summer season takes hold. Keep up to date with on Facebook.
Big thanks must also go Chris and the team at iGigs. They have reviewed a couple of our gigs as well as giving us space to do a monthly diary throughout 2011.
Finally, can i wish readers all the best for 2012 from Rhythmnreel, slainte.
Thanks very much to Jim Kennedy for his time
