Mull comes to town – Roddy Woomble and friends, OneTouch, Eden Court, Wednesday 30th October 2024.
The coming of the autumnal dark nights are a great time for story telling and that is what an almost full OneTouch in Eden Court got during this evening.
Proceedings started with a short session from the Mull singer/songwriter Sorren Maclean. Mr Maclean performed some excellent guitar picking in a range of styles. A particular standout was a musical portrayal of a trip along the Californian coastline. Sorren joked about his upcoming recording release – coming out in April 2025 – 10 years after his first. This first recording – Winter stay autumn is available on Bandcamp – along with a track from the new release. This track is entitled – Like a wolf to winter.
After a short break Sorren reappeared on stage and was joined by fellow Mull residents – Roddy Woomble (voice/guitar) and Hannah Fisher (fiddle/voice). The trio ran through a wide range of old and new material including some from Mr Woomble’s band Idlewild. Mr Woomble had some banter with the audience including musings on the significance of the stage background – had it something to do with Halloween? He also had a few reminiscences including one about a fight in the audience at a previous concert he had given at Eden Court.
Roddy over the years
The performance is part of a UK tour to promote the recording the trio, along with others, have recently produced – the very evocatively entitled – Sometime During the Night We Fell Off the Map – . This has been recorded in an old church – Bunessan Baptist Church on Mull.
Whether by accident or design the informal stage layout very much replicated the church interior with the three musicians working away in the small space. Additionally with a nod back to Highland history the stage setting, the One Touch and the informality of the musicians gave the evening a very much ceilidh, story telling setting. The minimal lighting and excellent sound also added to the atmosphere.
All in all a very enjoyable performance and evening.
