Skerryvore ,with Runrig’s Iain Bayne, Calum Mackenzie Jones and City Of Inverness Pipe Band, at Ironworks Venue, Inverness.
A crowd of over 200 were in early to catch Calum’s acoustic set which went down really well. With a buoyant happy crowd, he endeared himself to the crowd early explaining he has been to Tiree (home to Skerryvore) and played at their music festival. He regailed a story of how he met a girl (who shall remain nameless, but the song’s called “Iona”) had a great time together so much so he wrote a song about her.
After performing said song, he then explained that when he got home he contacted her asking if she fancied meeting up in Glasgow? She said “Nah you’re alright”. Anyway the crowd loved his set and showed Calum some real appreciation throughout, he really is growing as a singer but the sound guys did him no favours with a far too heavy bass sound for his voice, but the crowd did not seem to care.
By the time Skerryvore came on the crowd had doubled with more still arriving, the crowd were in the mood for a party and Skerryvore happily obliged.
The expectant crowd got exactly what they wanted, foot stomping hand clapping Celtic Rock very much in the Skerryvore fashion. When Iain Bayne and several pipers from Inverness Pipe Band came on stage to join proceedings, the excitement and noise level increased to match that extra lift that they gave to the set.
There were a good few Christmas party people who came to the gig as footfall part way through Skerryvore’s set. The additions managed to take the noise and party atmosphere up an extra notch, not that it was needed but welcome all the same.
