Reef, with support from Vukovi, at The Ironworks, Inverness, 2/4/15. A review.
I seem to be finding a clutch of Scottish bands, Altered Sky being one of them that have very obvious American influences like Paramore and No Doubt which is a category these guys fit nicely in to, which is no bad thing.
With songs like ‘So Long Gone’ the guys from Troon could have a big future and tonight they certainly managed to catch the attention of a good few at the Ironworks.
My connections with Reef have been brief throughout the years (some of their set at Belladrum last year and of course the hit ‘Place Your Hands’) so it would be safe to say I wasn’t sure what to expect.
I am far too young to have seen Black Sabbath in their infancy, but that was what came to mind instantly. They have a rock sound fused with a little bit of funk, and a little bit of rap on occasion.
The “big hit” ‘Place Your Hands’ was slap bang in the middle of the set surrounded by a collection of big sounding rock grooves.
Those included ‘Naked’, ‘I Wouldn’t Have Left You’, ‘I’ve Got Something To Say’ and ‘Come Back Brighter’ with some new numbers thrown in for good measure like ‘Lone Rider’.
On the whole an enjoyable gig, the only downside was the sound. If your in to your bottom end and like the bass guitar vibrating your rib cage then fantastic but it was a bit too much to the expense of the vocals and guitar for my liking.
Thoroughly recommend checking out Reef if like me you are a bit late in arriving at the party.
