“the guys clearly enjoying themselves and really going for it during the songs big tempo change at the end.” review of their Ironworks gig
Atlas are a new band from Ross-shire who have laid down four tracks to announce their arrival on the scene.

Opening track, ‘Plain Sailing’ tips more than a nod towards Twin Atlantic and has a very Scottish indie rock feel to it. It does manage though to slip in some nice punky backing vocals. It does edge ever so slightly towards a more North American pop punk feel at times.

This theme is picked up in the second track ‘EXperiment’ which runs harder on the pop punk elements although it’s a little rawer than say the likes of a Blink 182. ‘Strawberries’, the title track keeps the pop punk running along but it is also evident that there is are strong melodies in here too. The first three tracks don’t particularly cover uncharted territory but for an early release by a young band it shows a lot of promise.

The final track is a cover of Adele’s ‘Rolling in the Deep’. Although it has been covered before this reveals a little more of Atlas. It gives lead singer Cameron Grant an opportunity to really display his vocal range which gives Atlas’s own spin on the well known song.

Overall the enthusiasm of the band is imprinted on these recordings along with songs which should appeal to those who follow the bands mentioned above. The journey may just be starting for Atlas but there is no reason why it shouldn’t be a long one.

They return to The Ironworks for the Winter Showcase.

Chartered surveyor by day, music reviewer by night, and occasionally I get to use my camera. A strange mix, but one that I enjoy. A chance meeting in the queue for Bella in 2010 led to the opportunity to write for InvernessGigs; a far cry from the days of writing for a football fanzine back in the late 80s, early 90s. My interests lie between the mainstream, the emerging and the local. Increasingly I find that we have more than enough locally to entertain us to necessitate a trip south. I’m always happy to give a listen, whatever the genre. Inverness has a plethora of talent, all of which I am more than keen to write about. If it encourages just one person to make the effort to listen to some new music I’ll be happy. You can contact Frank direct via frankieboyfin@gmail.com
