Inverness band The Galipaygos have arrived with latest album ‘Plain Sailing’. What you hear is unexpected. The usual cross of Americana come Highland rootsy mesh of sounds has for the most part, been cleared out to make way for a much more pop/rock feel with influences very much rooted in a different genre with a tip toe into a modern Brit Pop tone.

I can certainly hear a slight nod to bands like ‘The Kooks’, while the other notable influence could be from original Brit Pop rockers themselves, 60’s troubadours, The Kinks, minus the Cockney accent of course.

"The fiddle and Americana may be gone, but the stories of rejected love and hard luck are ever present"

From the jangly guitars and the bounce along of opening track ‘The Conversation’ followed by a journey through fourteen tracks in all, a range of emotions and feel come through from the album including the depths of melancholy in ‘Are’ to the highs of the more rockier and driving tracks of ‘That Lie I Told You’ and ‘You Can Never Come Back’.

The fiddle and Americana may be gone, but the stories of rejected love and hard luck are ever present, and lets face it, apart from Pharrells ‘Happy’ how often to you hear a great song that has a happy ending!

All in all, a very different outing for The Galipaygos. It will be interesting to see how they move forward from here in their journey in to new grounds both from a recording perspective and in live shows, and to see, how many Americana fans will follow them into their new promised land. They have made a good start, now to continue the good work.

You can purchase the album, which is released on the 14th of July, 2014, at The Galipaygos website.
