24th of May sees the Spectrum Centre, Inverness, host the North Highland College Showcase and CD launch.
The event will bring together three bands with current links to Alness College; The Kitty Black Band, Silver Coast and Spoke Too Soon.
The Kitty Black Band ooze retro rock, described as having “a 80’s power pop/rock edge and a vibe of Pat Benetar or Joan Jett” the Nairn based band is fronted by sound production student Kim Brown. Kim has been writing and performing her own material for six years and was commissioned to write and produce the Nairn County FC centenary celebration anthem “We Believe” earlier this year.
With a mixture of influences from Biffy Clyro to Fall Out Boy, Spoke Too Soon defy genre as Joe Stainke of the band commented ; “I might say we’re punk-ish with heavy parts or metal-ish with pop punk influences or some tripe along those lines, but hopefully they just ignore the labels and listen to the songs.”
One of their fans is none other than Jim Gellatly “Spoke Too Soon’s youthful energy and raw punk pop swung it for me” he declared when he judged them victors of the Highland’s Battle of the Bands 2013. The four piece features music production student, Kieran Auld on drums.
Music Performance Student Andy Thomas is the guitarist of final band Silver Coast, a 4-piece alternative/rock band from Inverness. The band recently released single ‘Believe’ which Rick Fulton of The Daily Record commented “Aaron Murray’s (frontman) echo-infused voice and pounding backline, Believe harks back to the glory days of Big Country”.
The band have recently been gigging in various venues in Scotland from Fort William to Glasgow and have recently been announced to play the goNORTH showcase in June.
The event will also will feature original sets from the music performance students and CDs featuring songs from the students, and their bands, which has been produced, recorded and mixed by students from the sound production course.For the night the Spectrum Centre is set to be transformed with high-end sound and lighting equipment being brought in especially for the gig.
The gig starts at 7.30pm and is open to all ages. Entry is £3, or £5 including a copy of the CD.
