Landing at the Ironworks on Sunday 2nd March just like the spaceship that appears on so many ELO album covers is ‘The Orchestra’ a band that includes a wealth of UK and American musicians that have at one time appeared in the original ELO.
ELO II eventually merged into ‘The Orchestra’ at the start of the millennium after original drummer Bev Bevan retired and has continued to play sold out shows all over the world.
The line-up includes original ELO members Mik Kaminski on violin and Lou Clark on strings and keyboards, with ELO II members Eric Troyer who has sang backing vocals on classic numbers from KISS, Aerosmith, Meat Loaf, Billy Joel and countless others, Parthenon Huxley on guitar who has written hits with the likes of Foreigner. The line-up is completed by drummer Gordon Townsend and bassist Glen Burtnik, famous for a ten-year stint of fronting American classic rock band Styx.
The Scottish date is sandwiched between two sets of American dates. They return to the UK after a tour through Florida and Louisiana then return to take in Wisconsin, Illinois, Florida and New Mexico.
For the closest you can come to that orchestrated rock sound of its hey day in the 1970’s and early 1980’s, ‘The Orchestra’ are the only ones re-creating the sound with real authenticity. They are certainly worth checking out.
