A review of PAWS at the Hothouse stage at Belladrum 2013 on the 3rd of August.
Attracting the indie crowd into the Hot House tent, PAWs reminded us why they’re one of the most loved bands hailing from the Highlands.
Kicking straight into “Catherine 1956” they immediately made their mark on the festival and got the crowd moving. They also smashed through big hits such as “An Honest Romance” and “Bloodline.” The latter of which is a song written about cancer, and was introduced with the sentence “this song is about cancer, dance to it. I bet you never thought you’d hear that.” Correct. It is an extraordinarily catchy song however, and I did dance.
As well as some crowd favourites they gave us a taste of some of their new songs including “Let’s All Let Go” which felt like it had a lot more angst behind it than some of their other songs. They’re due to go back to America next month to record their new album, and I personally can’t wait to hear the end result, if this is anything to judge it by.
Throughout their set they also displayed an incredible sense of humour, with on stage banter and even endorsing the ‘cup guys’ who spent their entire weekend walking around collecting cups from the ground. I almost enjoyed the moments in between songs as much as the songs themselves, an all round enjoyable set. It’s unfortunate that they’re no longer going to be supporting The Cribs in Inverness later this month, due to the show being cancelled – they’re definitely a band I’d recommend catching.
