Dylan surprises and impresses

A review of Dylan Tierney playing the Seedling stage on the 2nd of August at Belladrum 2013.

Spurred on by a small collection of his fan club down the front, Dylan Tierney once again impressed with his highly emotive set.

Comfortably filling the Seedlings tent he stunned everyone with his beautifully distinctive vocals. He opened his set with the powerful “I Did.” The lyrics in this will have taken those who haven’t heard him before by surprise – his songs are all incredibly deep. When listening to him you can feel his passion and the pain behind his words.

Despite the dark nature of his lyrics, some of his songs are surprisingly up tempo – causing people to start dancing in the middle of the tent.

Highlights from his set included “Shine A Light”, “Locked Up” and old favourite “The Boat Song.” Dylan ended on a new song, choosing not to play the song that the majority of people know, being “Have You Ever” was an unusual choice – however, it shows the strength of the rest of his music that he doesn’t need to play one of his biggest songs to get an impressive crowd reaction.

Ever since I could understand it, I have been fascinated by the English language. It connects us, yet is also a key factor in defining us all as individuals. Combining my interest in journalism and my passion for music had always been something of a dream for me. I spent much of my teenage years travelling round the country to go to gigs, then would write up short pieces to be kept in a scrapbook of memories. Since being given the opportunity to start writing for Inverness Gigs around six months ago, I have developed my skills and passion further. I have interviewed some of Scotland’s up and coming artists, I was part of the team providing extensive coverage of this year’s Belladrum festival, I regularly attend gigs around the local area - helping to provide support to the many high quality bands around, as well as having the opportunity to review some of the higher profile shows.
