Who are you?

I’m Josephine Sillars and I’m a 17 year old singer-songwriter from the Black Isle. I write quirky, creative, pop songs taking inspiration from the likes of Regina Spektor and Nina Simone.

How has the music world treated you  in 2012?

It’s been a great year for me. I’ve been in and out of the Market Bar, supporting James Mackenzie and Searching for Donkeys, I had a successful set on the HEN Stage at Belladrum, I’ve been in and out of The Eagle and and I played LUV Cafe in Glasgow. I’ve also got the Winter Showcase at the Ironworks and another gig in Glasgow at The Roxy coming up which I’m super excited about. I’ve also been recording some more demos. My newest songs “Hurricane” and “Corners” are up on sound cloud (see below).

What acts/gigs that you have seen have stood out for you this year?

My favourite gigs that I’ve played this year would have to be Belladrum and Luv Cafe. There were about a hundred people in the tent, which was absolutely brilliant and made for an exhilarating atmosphere. It was a very well received set and I had a lot of fun. Playing in Glasgow was also a great experience. The amount of talent I was playing with in LUV Cafe was extraordinary and very enjoyable. It was good to be playing alongside such talent- and I’m looking forward to going back on the 16th of December.

An act that really stood out for me this year would have to be Duncan Overmeer (aka Matchstick Maker). I saw him in the Coffee Shop a few months back and his songs were just incredible. Clever lyrics with catchy tunes. Also, I saw Eleanor Kane in LUV Cafe when I was playing. She’s only fifteen, but she has an incredible voice. Keep an eye out for her.

Have you got a favourite album (s) of the year?

My favourite album of the year is a tie between Amanda Palmer’s “Theatre is Evil” and Mumford and Sons’ “Babel”. I saw Mumford for the second time at Rockness, and they blew me away. “Babel” is fantastic. I also saw Amanda Palmer in summer, and I’m going to see her again next March. “Theatre is Evil” is compassionate and inspiring.

What would you like from The Claus?

What would I like from Santa… a new computer. Haha, no, I would just like some cash and maybe some Doctor Who DVDs.

Who are you keeping an eye open for in 2013?

I’ll be looking out for Jemma Tweedie in 2013. I met her at the Coffee Shop and she was wonderful supporting Charlotte Church at Bogbain.

What are your hopes and plans for your music for 2013?

My hopes and plans for 2013 are to get some more serious gigs. I just want to play. I’ve been working on new songs, which have a new and exciting sound I want to share. Also, I’ll hopefully be getting an LP recorded.

Got anything to plug?

My next gig in Inverness is at the Winter Showcase. Come along. It should be great fun- and keep an eye out for me in the central belt.

Tickets for the Winter Showcase are available via www.IronworksVenue.com.

A lifelong passion for music matched with a geeky fascination for social media and websites resulted in the creation of Inverness Gigs back in 2010. The aim of the site is to help promote, support and generally raise awareness of the local music scene. In fairness fifteen years of being a psychiatric nurse never prepared me for the experiences that we have had over the last few years and the evolution of Inverness Gigs has certainly been a steep learning curve.I currently write (less and less), edit and co-ordinate most of the Inverness Gigs activities.Occasionally seen on Twitter, and  LinkedIn, if you want get in touch you can contact me via our Facebook page.
