The line- up of the the final showcase event of 2012, to be held on the 28th and 29th of December, has just been announced.
Ironworks is delighted with the return of the Winter Showcase, two nights back to back featuring 16 of the most exciting emerging talent in the Highlands
The 2011 event played host to a startling array of local talent including Iain McLaughlin & The Outsiders, ROADWAY, KOBI, Abagail Grey, Red Kites, The Frues and Toby Michaels. The format will remain the same as last year where each night will feature 8 acts with staggered sets so that people will have the opportunity to witness all 8 acts in one night
The 2012 Winter Showcases will highlight the relentless and consistent amount of talent evident in the area whilst celebrating the quality and diversity of the current contemporary music scene .
Ironworks Booking Assistant Steve Robertson said, ‘It’s great that Winter Showcase is returning for 2012 and we feel that these showcases will give an opportunity to young acts in the area as well as some of the key acts to emerge in the last 12 months”.
So who are the acts that have been announced?
First off, Cleavers return to the Ironworks, the Elgin based trio who describe themselves as “Angry, bitter, noisy and harsh pop music” . They have continued to grow in stature this year and no doubt will even more of a stir in 2013.
Jake Bolt fronted Oxides, who by their own admission have been relatively quiet at the moment, will get an opportunity to remind everybody why there was so much excitement when they burst on to the scene in the summer.
Barry Mackay completes his evolution from two man acoustic act to 4-piece band with the debut of Furry Vengeance at the Winter Showcase, expect to see electric workings of “Little Ray of Sunshine” and “Call My Name”. Barry said of the band’s selection to play that he was “Delighted to be selected for the showcase which will be the new bands debut be young be foolish but be furry”.
Last Summer Effect will make it three in a row for Showcases after their game changing appearance at the Easter Showcase, their year has seen them play Belladrum and MV Festival as well as stretching their wing with performances in Glasgow, Perth and even Dingwall. Stephen Bull, bassist with the band, said “We’ve had a really good year, and have been grateful for all the support we have received along the way. To be welcomed back the Ironworks for a third successive time is a massive honour and a great way to finish our year.”
Singer song-writer Josephine Sillars takes to the stage, a very busy lady at the moment with appearances in Glasgow, The Eagle and Inverness Cathedral. Whether her ironing board will be making a guest appearance is anybody’s guess.
Team Kapowski and their high octane, “expect the unexpected” live show is welcomed back to the Ironworks for the showcase.
Glasgow based Questions of Moscow who identify influences such as Teenage Fanclub, Ryan Adams, Steve Earle and The Vaselines. However we apologise for needing to use the oracle that is Facebook to discover a bit more about them. Also from further afield are The Carousels whose LP ‘Sweet Northern Light’ was released this year, they describe a flexible line-up “The Carousels exist in many ways like a collective, with band members old and new dropping in and out whenever suits. Once a Carousel, always a Carousel, if you will.”
Toby Michaels Rolling Damned, keeps er rolling into the Winter showcase. The addition of the band to Toby’s energetic live show, will be a massive contrast to those who have not seen him since his acoustic slot at the Winter Showcase last year. With plans of online-comics, movie trailers and single releases, 2013 should be a good year for the group.
Dorec-A-Belle will finish off a busy year for the band at the showcase. With promises of a follow-up to their sampler which was released in May and a list of bookings already for early 2013, the band hope to keep up the momentum.
Origami Wolf (Rory Baldwin formerly of The Ball Deep)will be bringing his friends along, to give a different dimension to his tunes. Last on our list, but our list was random. are Fallen Riot who were described by the ICA in 2009 “One of the Highlands most exciting new metalcore band”.Nearly three years later they are hosted by the Showcase and you can see whether they live up to their potential.
New music is not just for Christmas, but what better time to celebrate the talent around us?
