With less than a fortnight left to BFest 2012, Yasmin Ali and Chris Lemon have a look at some of the acts that stand out.
The LaFontaines
Winners of “Best Live Act” at the Scottish Alternative Awards, The LaFontaines take their exhilarating live show returns to B Fest.The Motherwell five piece have won a devoted fan base from touring up and down the UK including the Ironworks and a recent appearance in Wick .The LaFontaines may look like you’re average indie band but add a hint of hip hop courtesy of rapper frontman Kerr Okan and they become something much more extraordinary. Pair that with punchy lyrics about the culture we live in today and you can see that The LaFontaines are a lot more than meets the eye.
Fire in Effect
Up and comers Fire in Effect are a band with the incredible ability to hook you in with their raw energy.
Although the Dunfermline four man band are only in their teens it is clear that the boys have the dedication and ambition to go far and with every new experience their music continues to grow better and better. Single “Doing Alright” reveals the pop punk charm of Fire In Effect which could see the band soar into the hearts of their generation.
Penguins Kill Polar Bears
Notorious noisemakers Penguins Kill Polar Bears bring rock and roll to B fest.Every single taken off of EPs Dawn Vessel & Veins is an anthem just built for the arenas. Whereas 2011’s Sapling allows the delicate vocals of Ben Proudlock to take centre stage, well at least the first half of the song until their trademark massive riffs kick in.It’s only a matter of time before these guitar thrashers follow in the footsteps of the likes of Biffy Clyro.
Little Kicks
Aberdeen four piece are no strangers to playing the Scottish festival circuit with slots at Belladrum and T in the Park under their belts.The quirky band always deliver spectacularly upbeat live shows which has seen them share the bill with The Kooks and fellow Scotsmen Glasvegas.However it’s their ability to write catchy indie songs that will make you swoon after them.
Jamie Reid
Fair to say we have not seen much of Jamie since his Halloween slot in Inverness, although he has been busy gigging down south and was well received at The Wee B, back when it was sunny. When we saw him, his personality and song writing won us over and certainly his latest release “Growing Old” from his debut album Showing Face shows that he has lost none of his charm.
The Proclaimers
Readers of the site will know that at least one of the writers are a big fan of the the Leith boys, The Proclaimers. The tunes remain ageless and those trying the newer material will see that none of their passion or ability to write a cracking tune has gone. The anthems will get the crowd going, without a doubt, but there is far more to them than “500 miles”.
We can’t really stop there the goNorth stage has ensured that a cracking list of new and ,er, emerging talent is also on show whether hip-hop duo Team Kapowski, fresh from supporting Zane Lowe, Them & Us and the ever reliable Iain McLaughlin and The Outsiders.
