Megan Blyth launches her debut EP at Hootananny on the 8th of April, supported by Iain McLaughlin and Barry Mackay.
It is hard to ignore Megan at the moment even if we wanted to (but who really would?). The singer songwriter has consolidated, in fact some might justifiably say exceeded, expectation. We first saw Megan as she played an unannounced slot at goNorth in 2011, our reviewer commented “A legacy of Amy Macdonald but better, she was young and nervous but not so much that she couldn’t knock the socks of everyone there. Truly someone to keep an eye on.”
So fast forward several months (and a heavy gigging schedule that has seen her play Aberdeen, Wick, festivals, Glasgow … you get the idea) her EP, fresh of the press and is awaiting it’s official launch. “Broken Rules” has recently gained space on the much coveted Jim Gellatly show, after he was in attendance at her recent Glasgow gig, the track also making it onto the recent Netsounds Unsigned podcast.
The three track EP features the aforementioned “Broken Rules”, Fading Away” and “Freedom of Silence”, clearly emphasises a conscious decision not to be pigeon holed as an Amy MacDonald or the like, On talking to her manager , Paul Elliot, in December he acknowledged Megan’s desire “to be less folky than some of her contemporaries going for “a dirtier darker style”.” The darker and certainly more mature styling are particularly evident, some may say a million miles away from some of her lighter material.
The EP launch promises to be a special occasion, support will come from Iain McLaughlin and Barry Mackay.
