FEEL THE FORCE! on the 17th of September at the Ironworks
MIXTAPE machine and audio visual scratchmaster, DJ Yoda returns to Inverness in September. His genre defying set tore up the Goldenvoice arena at Rockness and the North Londoner is keen to display his genius again, at Ironworks.
Yoda’s pioneering scratch and mix visuals combined with his uber eclectic DJ sets are a uniquely immersive experience. Armed with his trusty Pioneer SVM1000 mixer, a bulging hard drive full of choice cuts and some rare film, TV and YouTube footage, the legendary turntablist will transform Ironworks into a fusion of clubbing and the movies.
DJ Yoda was Instrumental in creating the bootleg ‘cut-up’ style and his tongue-in-cheek mixing redefined hip-hop…by making it fun. His mix CD series “How To Cut and Paste” reflects his live performance, evolving over the last ten years, utilising his turntable skills and diverse influences. Cut-ups include funk, Baltimore, reggae, gangsta rap and jungle stirred up with diverse samples from The Goonies, The A-Team, Sesame Street and Emmerdale to make unashamed party music. Nothing is sacred. How To Cut and Paste Vol.4 blew the barn doors off with a country and western theme while Vol.5 “The ‘30’s Edition” featured the kings of swing retooled with raw 21st century beats.
Yoda’s keenly defined sense of humour is the mixing agent for his potpourri of every musical genre with every form of video. Recent AV tours “DJ Yoda Goes To The Movies”, “Magic Cinema Show” and “National Video Vacation” took the art of video jockeying to the next level, building on the foundations laid by the likes of Coldcut and Hexstatic in the late nineties, taking the clubbing experience to another dimension.
A true feast for the senses.
Part dance floor destroying selector, part turntablist supremo, part stand-up comedian, DJ Yoda is in demand. Q magazine named him as “one of the ten DJs you must see before you die.” He was a judge for three years on the DMC DJ World Championship Finals having been the Scratch DJ of the year in 2001. He’s a regular guest on BBC Radio One, providing mixes for Steve Lamacq, Annie Mac and Pete Tong. Yoda recently mixed up the Champions League highlights for ITV’s Champions League Final coverage. He also played on the same bill as Steve Martin, Dave Chappelle and Chris Rock at the HBO Comedy Festival in Las Vegas.
In between DJ’ing to packed-out clubs from China to Brazil to Australia to…Dores. DJ Yoda played Glastonbury last weekend but Rockness burned in to his consciousness: “Rockness was amazing…in a summer full of festivals it really stands out as the most beautiful site and a very cool crowd. I got to hang out too, which was really good fun!”
Yoda will not have much time to hang out on his next visit due to his tour obligations but he will enjoy sharing his hilarious mishmash of hip-hop, pop culture and bad taste with his fans at Ironworks.
His blast of good time spontaneity will help defeat the dark side as September nights draw in around the Highland capital.
