Whether camping, glamping or sleeping under a bush Sunday arrives with a further 12 main stage acts of which highlights include:
China Crisis – From the hotbed that produced many of the 80s most influential artists such as Julian Cope, Pete Wylie, Ian McCulloch to name but a few came China Crisis. Formed in ‘79 in Kirkby, China Crisis produced melodic pop with a political leaning. From 1982s “African and White” through hits such as “Working with Fire and Steel” and “Wishful Thinking” gave the band more than just chart success but critical acclaim. 1985 brought further hits with “Black Man Ray” and “King in a Catholic Style (Wake Up)”. The band celebrated their 25th anniversary in 2007 with a two-month UK tour, they supported OMD on their October tour of 2008.
Heaven 17 – If ever a band sounded as relevant now as they did in the 80s, its Heaven 17. Who would have thought when Ian Craig Marsh and Martyn Ware split from The Human League and were joined by Glenn Gregory on vocals that they would become the success story that they were and still are now. Hits included “Let Me Go”,” Come Live With Me” and the timeless “Temptation”. Fresh from last year’s nationwide tour celebrating the 30th anniversary of “Penthouse and Pavement” Heaven 17 will be wowing the crowds at Rewind with sounds and lyrics as relevant as ever. Now producing their monthly internet radio show ‘ Music For Growing Up To’ they have no plans to take a back seat.
Kim Wilde – Not just the 80s recording artist, Kim’s career has gone on to encompass such varying roles such as performer, journalist, actress, radio presenter and garden designer – some people never rest on their laurels! From her first single “Kids in America”, which became a worldwide hit on its release in 1981, through a string of million- selling albums and single success followed including “Chequered Love”, “Water On Glass”, ‘Cambodia’, “View From A Bridge”, “You Came” and “You Keep Me Hangin’ On”, she’s enjoyed a varied and highly successful career. Still producing new material and touring Europe extensively, Kim will be stopping at Rewind to reclaim her Princess of Pop crown and entertain.
Fiction Factory – As you all know, we at InvernessGigs love to support local act. In the case of Rewind the local act representing Perth is Fiction Factory! The band has reformed especially for Rewind with founding members Kevin Patterson, Eddie Jordan and Chic Medley. It goes without saying that Fiction Factory is best know for the memorable “(Feels Like) Heaven”, which reached number 6 in the UK charts in February 1984. The chosen clip is Feels Like Heaven nearly 25 years on. It was made for a fans 25th wedding anniversary. Video shot and produced, in Perth, by Brian Vicary. Check out the shirt hanging in the background. This is the same shirt Eddie wore for their Top of the Pops appearance back in 1984! Best of luck to the local lads!
Human League – The 1980 release Dare was one of the most iconic albums of the 80s, who doesn’t own a copy? The Human League almost never was as the band splintered in 1980, with the formation of Heaven 17 by Ware and Marsh. However, in one of the most retold stories in music history, Philip Oakey entered a Sheffield nightclub and plucked two schoolgirls from obscurity to what would be super stardom (after he asked their parents – things were done properly in those days!), and as they say, the rest was history. As relevant today as they were in the 80s, if relevant includes having “Don’t You Want Me”covered on Glee! With a string of hits that also included “Love Action (I Believe in Love)”, “(Keep Feeling) Fascination”, “Louise” and “The Lebanon”.
That is a pick of just five of the artists on show on Sunday, with a further seven, it should be a fully packed Sunday!
