who
Thanks to Jim again for the up date on the going ons of Rhythmnreel:
What a lovely spring we’ve been having – hope it wasn’t an early summer! Rhythmnreel are back on the road after too long hibernating. 5 whole weeks and no gigs – never again!
Since getting back into the saddle we’ve had a few weekends over on the west coast – Gairloch, a weekend in Western Isles and finally over at Plockton. Phew, that’s back to normal and no mistake!
For those who have been out to see us they’ll have been learning the words to the chorus a new song – “Oh mighty sea, bring the boys home”. It’s a wee song we wrote about HMS Iolaire which sank within sight of Stornoway harbour on New Years Day 1919. It had 270 men on board returning from World War 1. Tragically, 200 of them drowned. There is barely a cemetery in Lewis that does not have a grave from that night. The song came from a trip last year when we went out to the memorial near the Beasts of Holm. Anyway, the song is in memory of those and all war heroes.
On a lighter note, I have to report that the Scourie crew have once again been utterly amazing – 11 of them came over to Stornoway to watch the band. Total respect to you guys!
Looking forward, there are more trips North coming up, a wee trip to Germany in June where the Doodlesach will get a little airing – not the Doodlebug as was last trip’s notable little slip.
We have a couple of local gigs in July and August – Ironworks on July 9th during the Scottish Open weekend and a fundraiser for “The Kids of Kolkata” ( more details here and you can buy tickets here ) on August 12th in Strathpeffer Pavilion .
It’s shaping up to be another great summer. Hope to see you around!
Slainte,
Rhythmnreel
