Abigail Grey and friends, Ironworks, Room 2, Friday April 22nd 2011
Friday 22nd April was the date; the small 60 seat Ironworks Room 2 was the venue. This concert consisted of three parts
.
First to appear was local singer songwriter Maryann Frew – guitar and voice. During a short set Maryann presented four songs mixing the vocal qualities of Joni Mitchell and Emmylou Harris with the spacey acoustic guitar style of early Neil Young.
Next up was one sixth of the Glasgow based group This Silent Forest – Graeme Macdonald (the Squirrel) – again just guitar and voice. Graeme played a varied set of originals and cover versions and developed a banter with the audience on which to play. A Mars bar was on offer if we could guess which song one of the covers was – no one won the prize.
Finally local group Abigail Grey appeared to launch their new CD – Apple, cherub, dove. Their line up of two harpists (one doubling with trumpet), a bassist, pianist and drummer produce a very unique and pleasing sound. Comparisons include: the Penguin Cafe Orchestra, Wim Mertens and the Incredible String Band. Clare Campbell wrote all the songs and did the bulk of the vocal work. The Leonard Cohen tinged the Soup Carrier and a song entitled Pike particularly stood out. At the end of the concert everyone was given a copy of the CD. The sound team at the concert also deserve a mention as they produced a very clear sound for all the wide range of instruments present in a very small space.
