Heavy riffs, restless rhythms and a deeply personal story. Anchor Lane deliver a compelling piece of alternative rock with plenty beneath the surface.
NIGHTMARES arrives like a sonic assault, its crushing guitars immediately commanding attention. But Anchor Lane aren’t content to simply turn up the volume. The Glasgow trio introduce carefully judged changes in pace, shifting the focus between Conor Gaffney’s vocals and the instrumentation. It’s a striking opening, with a sense of purpose behind every change in direction.
The intensity takes on a different meaning when you discover the story behind the song. Frontman Conor Gaffney has experienced night terrors for more than a decade, and NIGHTMARES draws on that deeply personal struggle. It brings a greater understanding of the frustration running through the lyrics, adding a sense of vulnerability to a track that might otherwise be defined by its sheer force.
Gaffney’s vocal performance is central to the song’s impact. His delivery remains remarkably restrained for much of the track, drawing you into the lyrics rather than competing with the guitars. When he finally lets loose, those outbursts feel thoroughly earned, their impact heightened by everything he’s held back.
There’s plenty to admire in the songwriting too. The riffs hit hard, but Anchor Lane understand the value of a strong melody, weaving memorable hooks through the heavier passages without compromising their impact. Nothing feels included simply for the sake of making more noise. Instead, the individual elements complement one another, with the lyrics, melodies and instrumental passages each leaving a lasting impression.
Reuniting with producer Bruce Rintoul, whose previous credits include Twin Atlantic and Vukovi, Anchor Lane sound in particularly assured hands. Recorded at Glasgow’s 45 A-Side Recordings, NIGHTMARES benefits from a polished, muscular production that never feels overworked. There’s a real clarity and confidence to the recording, allowing the band’s personality to shine through without sacrificing any of its raw edge.
There’s something particularly fitting about NIGHTMARES arriving just a day before Anchor Lane headline Halloween Riff Fest at Inverness’s Tooth & Claw 31st October. It’s a song that combines a deeply personal story with considerable musical ambition, and one that should be quite something to experience live. With Halloween almost upon us, Anchor Lane have provided a suitably dark soundtrack to the occasion.
