Medicine Men, at Mad Hatters (above Hootananny), Inverness.
After attending Stiff Little Fingers at the Ironworks I hot footed it over to Mad Hatters to catch catch a brief dose of Medicine Men on their Saturday night foray north.
Medicine Men release their new album on vinyl in May on the Last Night From Glasgow label and this was a perfect opportunity to catch them before that release. The Last Night From Glasgow record label is based on a crowd funding model to help fund new artists through all stages of a music release (Check it out here). At this point I should declare that I have a vested interest as a recently signed up member.
Medicine Men are a four piece fronted by Ian Mackinnon, who occasionally pops up taking a vocal turn with Crash Club. They open with ‘Show What You’re Made Of’, a single release from 2014 which still has a fresh, but retro feel to it with synths giving it a psychedelic groove. It is eminently danceable as the Saturday night crowd were getting down from the off. In fact, the set kept up this early promise as they moved into ‘Sleeping With The Light On’ with it’s more chilled, laid back vibe maintaining the dancing in front of the band.
There is a real air of cool funky beats pervading their set and it was acknowledged in by a pint being bought for Ian in appreciation. I wasn’t able to take in the full set but was about the only person to leave early. A great taster in anticipation of the album appearing in a few weeks time (Pre- order here).
