Inspired by events in the war-torn Balkans, Dominic Hill’s production is at once contemporary and ageless.
It might well be a new thing for this site to have an opera reviewed on it, but that’s okay, because last night at Eden Court was the first time I have ever been to the opera. So we’re all on the same boat.

I didn’t study Macbeth at school, so was only dimly aware of the story beyond the elements that have become cultural touchstones like the three witches and ‘Out damn spot’ and what have you. So I was pleased when I discovered that this was being sung in English, and it was remarkably easy to follow the story – all you had to do was listen to the words!

The set was simple but ingenious – there were a number of stage entrances that were used to brilliant effect, including one towards the end that was genuinely creepy and brought to mind Kubrick’s The Shining.

I enjoyed how the setting was a modern one, which made for some interesting directorial decisions. We meet the witches as the cower in the dark, dressing in grungy/gothy clothes smoking and drinking from cans and bottles. Macbeth dresses in military fatigues and a suave modern suit.

The performances were roundly superb, but I really have to single out the performer playing Lady Macbeth – she was astonishing. The depth and power of her performance were almost visceral, delivering an emotional gut punch to even those seated furthest from the stage.

This production is touring the Highlands with stops in Ullapool and Portree coming soon – do yourself a favour and get out to see it
