Alan Frew 600x399 - Alan stays with you

Hailing from Troon, Alan Frew is a contemporary folk pop performer with a significant pedigree. Having played at far larger events and venues than this, if that troubled him he didn’t show it.

His influences include the likes of John Martyn and Nick Drake, and that is evident in this performance; but what a fine well to be drawing from. I for one was pleased to catch Alan, and I was left with a sense of his craft haunting me for the rest of the day. These are fine compositions with mature lyrics delivered in a distinctive and at times intensely fragile voice.

In sum, a particularly good match for this quiet, small and intimate venue. Wonderful.

Life-long engagement with music and a truly eclectic taste (although prog-rock and metal will usually have me scrambling for the off button). If pushed, I would have to say the Velvet Underground are one of the most important band’s of all time. Although I consider myself first and foremost a photographer, as regards reviewing I guess I cut my teeth in the vibrant fanzine scene of the 80’s. Around the same time I started taking photographs and, to be brief, performance and photography were made for each other: perfect match.
