Anticipation high for The 1975

A review of The 1975 at the Hothouse stage at Belladrum 2013 on the 2nd of August.

They were a fairly late add to the bill, but there was a lot of excitement about The 1975 coming to play Belladrum. The rock quartet from Manchester have been making waves in the music scene recently and they completely packed out the Hot House tent on Saturday night.

Several hours before they even took to the stage, there were already people clinging on to the barrier waiting for their set, ensuring they had prime position to see the band. With the reaction they received on the night, you’d be forgiven for thinking they’d been around for a long time with a string of albums behind them – truth is, they’re not there yet. I am without any doubt that they’ll be around for a long time to come if they continue to create music to the standard they are just now.

Their biggest hit to date is the wonderful “Chocolate” which received a fantastic reaction from the crowd, even from the opening riff. It’s a summer anthem for many, and now a festival memory. Following on from that they played new single “Sex” which got the crowd bouncing and singing along in all the right places.

Throughout their entire set they seemed to be a bit bewildered, yet delighted, by the amount of support they’re receiving. It is a genuinely pleasure to watch them play live and they nailed their set, standing in that tent felt like you were part of something special.

Ever since I could understand it, I have been fascinated by the English language. It connects us, yet is also a key factor in defining us all as individuals. Combining my interest in journalism and my passion for music had always been something of a dream for me. I spent much of my teenage years travelling round the country to go to gigs, then would write up short pieces to be kept in a scrapbook of memories. Since being given the opportunity to start writing for Inverness Gigs around six months ago, I have developed my skills and passion further. I have interviewed some of Scotland’s up and coming artists, I was part of the team providing extensive coverage of this year’s Belladrum festival, I regularly attend gigs around the local area - helping to provide support to the many high quality bands around, as well as having the opportunity to review some of the higher profile shows.
