Southampton based band, Coast, arrived in Inverness in February 2010, as an unknown band, and played a set at Hootannays that blew away the crowd, who had no idea who this band were.  The band then chose The Ironworks to launch their second album, The Turning Stone, in May 2011.  Since then they have returned to the Highlands to play a mini tour in August 2011, playing in Strathpeffer, Portree, Stornoway and Benbecula.

The band have announced that they are to return to The Ironworks on 12th May 2012.  This follows a highly successful sell out tour of Denmark in March 2012.

Many people question why a band from Southampton would travel so far north to play gigs in an area where they are relatively unknown.  Simply put, the band love the Highland audiences.

Coast are a five piece, celtic rock band, comprising of singer, songwriter, guitar player, keyboard player, Paul Eastham, his brother Chris Barnes on percussion, Steve Picken on lead and acoustic guitar, Hamish Ferguson on bass guitar and newest member, drummer, Andrej Chernjavskij.

Paul explains that his love of the Highlands and Islands of Scotland are as a result of him and his brothers having spent some of their childhood growing up in Benbecula.  Many of the songs that Paul has written have been inspired by his memories of Scotland.  Paul also has an amazing ability to turn stories about everyday life into the most perfect songs.

From the rocky sound of ‘The Caller’ to the emotionally charged, ‘The Ghost of Dan the Boy’, to the daily grind of Paul’s commute to work on the ‘Hythe Ferry’, the band will have you dancing, singing along and then silenced and stunned with their ballads.

The Turning Stone CD also features a track, ‘The Beat of You’, which was co-written by Iain Bayne, from Runrig, and features Beauly’s own, Duncan Chisholm on fiddle.

The band now have two successfully CD’s under their belt, Coast and The Turning Stone, as well as an EP.  They have played at some of the well known Festivals in mainland Europe, including The Tonder Festival and Folke In Schloss, playing alongside bands like Runrig, Skerryvore and Wolfstone.

In February 2010, Iain Bayne, announced that he was to manage Coast and this in turn brought a whole new audience for the band.

Paul Eastham is exceptionally talented and is a classically trained pianist, but can turn his hand to almost any instrument, from tin whistle to keyboard.

Coast have a massive travelling fan base, with fans regularly travelling from Germany and Denmark to listen to them play.

The band may hail from Southern English shores, but the heart of the music is definitely Highland.  Think Big Country, Dire Straits….. Mix the two about and you are almost there.

Definitely a band worth going to see, so stick the date in your diary and head along to The Ironworks to buy your ticket.

Support on the night is yet to be formally announced.

Tickets are now on  sale via www.IronworksVenue.com

Let’s give these far travelled guys a warm, Highland welcome.

A lifelong passion for music matched with a geeky fascination for social media and websites resulted in the creation of Inverness Gigs back in 2010. The aim of the site is to help promote, support and generally raise awareness of the local music scene. In fairness fifteen years of being a psychiatric nurse never prepared me for the experiences that we have had over the last few years and the evolution of Inverness Gigs has certainly been a steep learning curve.I currently write (less and less), edit and co-ordinate most of the Inverness Gigs activities.Occasionally seen on Twitter, and  LinkedIn, if you want get in touch you can contact me via our Facebook page.
