Vintage tea room The Tea Posy in Dingwall will host a 24 hour tea party on Saturday 24 March to raise funds for a local adventurer planning to embark on a solo row from New York to Stornoway.

The Tea Posy, which is owned and run by Julia Morgan (also contributor to invernessGiGs)

Julia is planning the event to raise funds for Niall Iain Macdonald, who will begin his solo row from New York to Stornoway in May in support of SAMH (Scottish Association for Mental Health).

Niall Iain (whose invernessGiGs badge wearing for the entire BBC Alba recording of Belladrum 2011 afforded him legendary status in our books) plans to row a distance of over 3400 miles alone in one of the most challenging, unpredictable and dangerous bodies of water in the world. He has been planning this incredible expedition for the past two years and expects the journey to take him almost three months.

Speaking of the tea party, Julia said:  “We are so excited about this whimsical extravaganza which will present a 24hour events programme which will include appearances by Dorec-a-belle, Abigail Grey and Mystic Shoes.

“Throughout the day and night we will be showing vintage film classics, there will be plenty of live music, a DJ set and a vintage fashion parade.

“We will host a tea dance and raffle; there will be a pop up parlour and even vintage cars on display.  And there will be an endless supply of tea and cake served in vintage china.”

Julia is part of a group (including other inverness Giggers Mar Dubanowski and Chris Lemon) sponsored to take part in the event for the entire 24hours.  However, tickets are on sale now for those who are interested in going along for any amount of time.  All proceeds from the event will go to the NY2SY challenge and SAMH.

Julie Macdonald, Community Fundraising Manager at SAMH, said:  “We are incredibly grateful to both Niall Iain and Julia for their fundraising efforts for SAMH.

“With one in four people in Scotland experiencing mental health problems at some point in their life, the work of SAMH is crucial to Scotland’s well-being. The money raised will make all the difference to people living with poor mental health across Scotland.”

Niall Iain said:  “I am undertaking my NY2SY challenge to prove to people who may be struggling with their own mental health that there is hope and that there is a way through. There is so much support available to those who need it and it can make such a difference to someone’s life to know that help is there. Only 10 people have successfully rowed solo from West to East across the North Atlantic and no one has ever completed the route that I am undertaking, it is truly a unique and historic adventure.”

Tickets for the party cost £10 and are available from The Tea Posy and The Green House in Dingwall as well as Hung Gallery in Inverness.

A lifelong passion for music matched with a geeky fascination for social media and websites resulted in the creation of Inverness Gigs back in 2010. The aim of the site is to help promote, support and generally raise awareness of the local music scene. In fairness fifteen years of being a psychiatric nurse never prepared me for the experiences that we have had over the last few years and the evolution of Inverness Gigs has certainly been a steep learning curve.I currently write (less and less), edit and co-ordinate most of the Inverness Gigs activities.Occasionally seen on Twitter, and  LinkedIn, if you want get in touch you can contact me via our Facebook page.
